Surname Database

This searchable BARNUM Family Database was developed using GedPage, Version 2.16. It offers a complete genealogy of the known Barnum lines of descent, from the immigrant ancestor Thomas BARNAM (1625-1695) and his English ancestors, down through the present. It is intended to serve as a reference site for anyone who is researching the genealogy of the Barnum, Barnam and Barnham families in England and North America. I've attempted to make it both comprehensive and relevant, while at the same time keeping it easy to use. I hope it will be a valuable reference source for genealogists, family scholars, and all those who are sufficiently curious about the origins of their family name to consider entering the challenging world of family genealogy for the first time.

The data found here may be used as a general index of Barnum lines, for research on any line of descent from Thomas BARNAM. Information is included for more than 10,000 individuals, and there should be clues to help in tracing virtually any Barnum line of descent. Although the often-mentioned connection of Thomas to the English line of Barnham has not been conclusively proven, it is very likely - and I've also included information concerning the English branch of our family.

The genesis of this Barnum family genealogy site was information found in several family genealogies published in the United States between 1900 and 1915. While many of the lines have been updated over the years, based upon documentary evidence gathered by me and by other Barnum researchers, the reader is cautioned that those original genealogies were poorly documented and some of the entries are still questionable. The data included here will certainly prove useful in seeking the answers to questions about lines of descent from our immigrant ancestor, but wherever it isn't well documented it should be used primarily as a guide to further research.

I've written a brief introduction for those who might like to review the family history of Thomas BARNAM - or of the family name in general - before beginning their own research among the numerous Barnum lines of descent. I've also included some little-known but fascinating information about Phineas Taylor ("P.T.") BARNUM, the famous showman. Finally, I've included a few hints and cautions concerning genealogical research both on this site and in other locations.
